Hintervoormann (head of the Cantonal Council): the hereditary
Pfalzgraf of the Roodberg clan.
As its name suggests, this canton covers the Clatspur ranges of eastern Perrenland.
Clatspurgen was Perrenland's first canton, the first to be formed in 400CY
during the tumultuous political events that led to Perren's Convocation of
Concatenation.
The formation of Clatspurgen was driven by the Roodberg clan. The Roodbergs
were originally a large Aerdi (Oeridian) tribe, and this is reflected in the
cultural and political climate of Clatspurgen. The nobility of the Roodberg
clan rule the area with an iron fist, backed by their Aerdi feudal traditions
and stiff laws. Religious reverence is often given to Oeridian gods more than
to the Flan gods of the Old Kerk.
Clatspurgen is a diverse land backed by high rugged mountains to the east,
gentle slopes and plains in the centre and the Quag to the west. Income from
mining, furs, agriculture, manufacturing and above all trade have fostered
the reputation that Clatspurgen is the wealthiest canton.
Political tensions in the canton between the ruling Roodbergs and some of
the fiercely independent Vosser clansfolk in the Clatspurs have been somewhat
defused by the re-emergence of the grey elven Principality of Kershane. As
part of granting Kershane cantonal status in 593 CY, the territory north of
the Kershane Pass and east of St Cuthbert's monastery was transferred from
Clatspurgen to Kershane, taking with it many of the rebellious Vosser settlements.
Note that the population figures given above predate the creation of the Canton
of Kershane.
