Perrenland Cantons
Vesbergen
The Canton of Vesbergen, more commonly known as the Sepia Uplands, is a
wild, hilly region mostly inhabited by gnomes and dwarves. It was for centuries
a peripheral part of Perrenland, a region where outlaws, robbers and draft
dodgers went to avoid the rule of law. Perrenland had long maintained a military
presence in key parts of the northern and western Uplands, such as Penrican
Keep.
Over the past ten or twenty years there had been an increasing push to formally
incorporate the Sepia Uplands into Perrenland as a new canton. Some of the
momentum was from pro-Perrenland inhabitants of the Uplands, but most was
from pro-expansion Perrenlanders, particularly in Traft Canton. The establishment
of a new canton was part of the political platform Orgus Bildgear used in
his campaign to become Voormann in 593 CY. True to his word, once he was acting
Voormann Orgus immediately declared the formation of the Canton of Vesbergen.
It is not yet clear whether or not the Canton will be a success. Some residents
of the Sepia Uplands see the Canton as an infringement on their traditional
independence and liberties, while others previously moved to the Uplands to
avoid Perrenese authority and don't want the law to catch up with them. The
cantonal administration at Kottemorte, three day's travel east of Traft City,
has little influence over the interior of the Uplands at present. However,
there are also promising signs of integration, such as the formation of a
new Auszugen (the 8th) at Kottemorte that includes significant numbers of
pro-integration locals in the ranks.
