The Cantons
Originally defined by natural features and clan boundaries, the eight "founding"
cantons have (with one exception) retained roughly the same borders over the
past two centuries, while the clans themselves have intermarried and spread,
in some cases across all Perrenland. There are now very few areas that are
completely populated by only one clan, and likewise few clans limit themselves
to only one area. As an example, Rosrijders are usually found on the Feronwold,
but you can find people from that clan in such far-flung places as Yattenhied
and Vesbergen.
In the past few years, the number of cantons has been expanded from eight
to eleven, with the addition of Vesbergen (better known as the Sepia Uplands)
and the granting of cantonal status to the semi-autonomous non-human kingdoms
of Kershane and Khundholm. Part of Clatspurgen was transferred to the new
Canton of Kershane, while part of Yattenhied's ambit claim to the western
Yatils was transferred to the new Canton of Khundholm.
The western (and much of the southern) border of Perrenland is not formally
defined. The area deep within the formidable Yatil Mountains is claimed by
no one, and those mountains stand as a natural barrier between Perrenland,
Ket and Tusmit. In contrast, the eastern border is with Highfolk and the Vesve
is well-defined, following the eastern edge of the Clatspur range and the
Sepia Uplands.
The majority of cantonal borders follow the lines of natural features, such
as the wide slow rivers that split the Feronwold. One exception to this is
the border between Traft and Vesbergen, which is not formally defined and
falls somewhere in the foothills of the uplands.
As with the stereotypes of the various clans, the descriptions of the various
cantons are also stereotypes, and many exceptions to these descriptions abound.
