Clothing and Fashion
In general, the style of clothing worn in Perrenland is similar to that worn
throughout most of the Flanaess, thanks to the past influence of the Great
Kingdom on Perrenese culture. Likewise, Perrenese fashion tends to follow
the trends set in Greyhawk City and the other great cities of the Flanaess.
As a result,
- People dressing for active roles (such as labourers,
soldiers, travellers and adventurers) tend to wear shirts and trousers.
- People dressing for sedentary roles (such as housekeepers,
scholars, priests and the indolent rich) tend to wear robes or dresses.
- People tend to wear cloaks and hats when outdoors.
There are some exceptions to these tendencies.
- Because military service is held in high regard throughout Perrenland, former
soldiers often dress in shirts and trousers even when now working in "desk
jobs", retired to a life of leisure, and in other sedentary roles. For
example, Voormann Orgus Bildgear rarely wears his formal robes of office,
preferring instead to wear his Auszug dress uniform.
- There is a cultural association between being a woman and wearing dresses.
This probably originated because most women spend part of their lives at home
raising their children, and as housekeeping is considered a sedentary role
they tend to wear dresses during this time. As a result, some women prefer
to wear dresses, even in situations (such as travelling) when wearing a shirt
and trousers would be more convenient.
Perrenese garb is distinguished from that worn in other parts of the Flanaess
by the following local variations.
- As a relatively cold country, fur is frequently used,
particularly for autumn and winter clothes.
- Perrenlanders routinely demonstrate their clan affiliations by wearing clothing
(particularly cloaks, badges and ruhebinden)
in their clan colours.
- Perrenlanders routinely demonstrate their military, religious, and social
affiliations by wearing clothing (particularly cloaks, badges, ruhebinden
and medals) that identify their allegiances and their achievements. For example,
soldiers wear badges that identify their Auszug, their Auszugen, and their
rank; bards of the Old Kerk always wear a blue cloak trimmed with purple,
while judges (rechters) always wear a blue cloak trimmed with silver.
- Perrenlanders travelling abroad routinely demonstrate their national affiliation
by wearing a badge with the red and white emblem of Perrenland.
Metagame information: Characters
with a home region of Perrenland are assumed to wear clothing and badges that
identify their membership in the publicly known, socially accepted meta-organisations
(including the clans, the fighting forces, the Old Kerk, and the rechters).
Players must tell their DM if their characters are concealing their membership
in a meta-organisation during an adventure. Unless specified by the meta-organisation,
there is no additional GP cost to have clothing that displays your meta-organisation
affiliations.
