Gender and Society
In general, there is no discrimination against either gender in Perrenland.
Individuals tend to be taken for themselves, regardless of sex. Women enjoy
equal rights, opportunities, and obligations as their male counterparts. Men
and women are both expected to complete three years of compulsory military
service; everyone has the same rights when it comes to buying, selling, and
inheriting property; nearly all occupations offer equal opportunities to both
sexes.
There are some variations in the frequency with which people of a particular
gender take up a particular profession, mostly caused by physical differences
between the genders. For example, a job that involves strenuous physical labour
is more likely to be held by a man because men tend to have greater physical
strength than women. Conversely, women are more likely to stay at home and
look after the children, particularly when the children are young, but this
is more because it tends to be more practical than because it's seen as "the
only thing women are good for". That said, women often postpone or choose
never to have children, preferring to focus instead on their profession -
many women are, for instance, career soldiers in the Auszug or the Pax Mercuri.
The only role in Perrenese society that is exclusively filled by one gender
is that of the skamteguler (shame crier), who are by tradition always female.
That said, there is no law that says a man can't be a skamteguler, and legends
say that there were male shame criers long ago.
