Languages
It has often been said that if a language is spoken anywhere in the Flanaess
then its being spoken somewhere with a Perrender accent. With so many Perrenders
serving in foreign climes, and often bringing back wives or husbands, visitors
to Perrenland usually have little trouble finding someone who can speak their
language. Perrenders also speak several languages amongst themselves. While
it's certainly possible to get by speaking only Stamtaal (the local dialect
of the Overking's Common), many Perrenders speak different languages within
their family, community and clan.
The most common languages are:
- Stamtaal, the dialect of Common spoken throughout Perrenland;
- Flan, spoken in the Yatil mountains, in Krestible and
Nederboden Cantons, by the Hussen, Rosrijder and Weisspeer clans, and within
the Old Kerk (Old Church);
- Old Oeridian (and dialects), spoken in Hugelrote and
Yatenheid Cantons, and by the Morgenrood and Roodberg clans;
- Dwarven, spoken by the Khund nation of the Yatils, and
by Dwarven communities and mixed race mining and mountain communities throughtout
the Clatspurs.
Stamtaal is not really a different language to the Overking's Common, though
it usually sounds like one to outsiders at first. It is characterised by some
elements of pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary drawn directly from Flan.
It usually takes a month for visitors to be able to speak Stamtaal reasonably
fluently.
Ur Flannae (archaic Flan) is the language of the original inhabitants of
the Quaglands (the region that is now called Perrenland) who are believed
to be the forefathers of the modern Flan. What became of their sophisticated
and powerful civilisation remains a mystery to this day, but you can still
find the rare scholar or isolated community who speak this complex language.
Ur Flannae uses a unique alphabet.
Metagame information: In addition
to those languages listed in the Living Greyhawk Gazeteer, two additional
languages are available to player characters with a home region of Perrenland.
- Stamtaal (the local version of the Overking's Common). All characters
created with Perrenland as their home region speak both Stamtaal and the
Overking's Common unless they have an Intelligence of less than 10, in which
case they must choose one dialect or the other to be initially fluent in.
- It takes a month for visitors to be able to speak Stamtaal reasonably
fluently (DC 10 Intelligence check to understand the basic meaning of
a communication until 4 Time Units have been spent in Perrenland).
- The Overking's Common is a slightly simpler dialect and can be learnt
in a fortnight by Stamtaal speakers (DC 10 Intelligence check to understand
the basic meaning of a communication until 2 Time Units have been spent
outside Perrenland).
- Ur Flannae (archaic Flan). All characters created with Perrenland as their
home region have access to Ur Flannae as a bonus language.
