Non-Humans in Perrenland
Perrenland is, like much of the Flanaess, a human nation. Four-fifths of
the population are humans; Perrenese society and culture derives from the
traditions of the Flan and Oeridian humans who lived in the Quaglands a thousand
years ago; the nation's leaders, heroes, and villains are humans.
That is not to say that there aren't substantial numbers of non-humans living
in Perrenland - after all, the remaining one-fifth of the population exceeds
90,000 in number. Many of Perrenland's non-human residents have adopted the
ways, mannerisms, and habits of the majority human population.
It is, however, prudent to recognise that, in general, the non-human races
are comparatively long-lived, and that it can take generations to adapt to
a "new" culture. After all, there are elves alive today whose grandparents
were adults before the Oeridians came to the Quaglands a thousand years ago.
Time will tell if the re-emergence of dwarven and elvish kingdoms within Perrenland's
borders will produce tensions between the Perrenese way of life and more
traditional Khund and Kershane ways of living.
Groups of the following non-humans live within the territory covered by Perrenland.
- Dwarves are the most common non-human population within
Perrenland (8% of the overall population, over a third of all non-humans),
and live throughout Perrenland. Most are descendants of the Khund nation,
and many have returned to Khundholm following the re-establishment of the
Kingdom in 593 CY.
- As they are in most parts of the Flanaess, the ever-travelling Halflings
(6% of the overall population) are relatively common in Perrenland.
- Elves are relatively uncommon (3% of the overall population),
but are found in substantial numbers in the northern Clatspurs. The grey
elves of the Clatspurs are from the Principality of Kershane, which has
been reformed following the emergence of the city of Kershane from magically-imposed
isolation in 593 CY.
- Gnomes are also relatively uncommon (2% of the overall
population), but the annexation of the Sepia Uplands as the new Canton of
Vesbergen has increased their numbers within Perrenland.
- The Quagaloogal Lizardfolk, who live in the marshes
and swamps around the shores of the northern half of Lake Quag, have been
long-standing allies of the civilised peoples of Perrenland. In particular,
the Quagaloogal are strongly associated with the Grove of the Old Kerk: there are small but significant numbers of Quagaloogal druids in the Grove,
and the homelands of the Quagaloogal are all Old Seed territory.
- The southern Yatils have significant numbers of Orcs,
who do not recognise Perrenese authority and sometimes raid trade caravans
and stadts in Krestible Canton. Many of the half-orcs of Perrenland are descended
from these communities.
- The Clatspurs are home to a goblinoid confederation led by the Guurhok
nation of Hobgoblins, who are in the process of being incorporated into Perrenland as a third semi-autonomous non-human kingdom, following the examples of Khundholm and Kershane.
