Religion
As with many other aspects of Perrenese society, traditional Perrenese religion
is ultimately Flan in origin. The Old Kerk ("Old Church") is the
local version of the Old Faith found throughout the Flanaess, and involves
the worship of a pantheon of ten Flan deities (including Nerull). These gods
form the general framework of religion in Perrenland for clan members and
act in many ways as the "nation binder". The Old Kerk holds little political
power but has quite a lot of "people power": followers are not slaves to the
worship of the Old Kerk but are respectful of their cultural traditions, of
which the Old Kerk is a significant part.
At the same time, Perrenland is a religiously tolerant society. People have
been bringing the faiths of other gods to Perrenland for a long time, first
through migration, then through mercenaries returning from elsewhere in the
Flanaess. Any god whose followers aren't disruptive to society can be worshipped
in Perrenland, either overtly or covertly. The followers of extreme or fanatical
gods have to be careful to not cause public disturbances and bring upon themselves
the ire of the local authorities, while the open worship of notoriously evil
gods is usually prohibited because of the other crimes the worshippers of
such gods commit. The Old Kerk is careful to maintain its role as the prime
faith of Perrenland and acts as necessary to maintain the status quo should
the need arise.
