Perrenland Geography
Lakes
The effect of the Clatspur and Yatil ranges is to hold Perrenland in a great
'U', a horseshoe of mountains, isolating Perrenland's interior from the rest
of the Flanaess. The open part of the 'U' is itself a barrier, with most of
its upper reaches occupied by Lake Quag, the third largest body of fresh water
in the Flanaess.
Lake
Quag is notorious for its fresh water monsters, strange currents and rips.
As many have previously observed, Lake Quag, like the Nyr Dyv, is more of
an inland sea than a lake. Certainly the size of the lake's inhabitants is
more typical of a salt-water ocean than a fresh water lake. Many of the Perrenlanders
who live on the lake's shores depend almost entirely on fishing to support
their livelihood, although the lake's inhabitants sometimes eat them in return.
No
other lakes in Perrenland are a fraction the size of Lake Quag. However, the
western Yatils abound with mountain tarns and meres, ranging from only a few
miles in length to the size of Lake Tsjocanth, some twenty miles long deep
within the central Yatils. The central plains of Perrenland are conspicuously
absent of large rivers and lakes, with the exception of the Velverdyva and
Lake Quag of course. This can make for dry summers for some farming communities
and the construction of small holding ponds and wells is common.
