Perrenland Politics
Karenin Weisspeer (534-593 CY)
Voormann 584-593 CY, Pfalzgraf of the Weisspeer clan and Uberauszegan of
the Auszug to 584 CY
Following what was seen as the disastrous decision by the previous Voormann
to swear to a neutrality pact with Iuz, the subsequent election of Karenin
was met with widespread acclaim. Karenin's more traditional clan-based political
alliances were expected to lead to him distancing Perrenland from Iuz, and
eventually breaking the non-aggression pact. However, Karenin sought consensus
on the matter to the exclusion of what many considered any real leadership,
stalling on any decision about the non-agression pact until many of his supporters
started to criticise him.
Karenin stood for re-election as Voormann in 591 CY, and was quoted as "being
most sorry for not according the people the respect they deserve and keeping
my counsel to myself. I concede that it must seem as though there has been
an effort to distance people from important decisions, but this has been a
sin of ignorance - for which I apologise - rather than a deliberate policy
of exclusion. We lie at an important juncture in our nation's development
and it would be unwise to bow unheedingly to the winds of change for no reason
other than dissatisfaction."
The election was due to be finalised in 592 CY, but the Concatenated Council
agreed to extend the finishing date into 593 CY as a result of the scandals
surrounding Karl Hussen. With public sympathy turning in Karenin's favour
following the abduction of his eldest daughter Hanne by Karl Hussen, Karenin
ensured his re-election as Voormann by entering into a political alliance
with Pfalzgraf Gutherie Roodberg that involved Karenin's greatest competitor
in the election, Hetmann Orgus Bildgear of Niederschlauss, becoming Karenin's
running mate.
On the night that his election was ratified by the Concatenated Council,
Karl Hussen destroyed the meeting chambers of the Council with it was in session.
In the chaos, Karenin disappeared, apparently kidnapped by the evil forces
allied with Karl Hussen. Late in 593 CY, it was reported that Karenin was
dead; his death was later confirmed and his body returned to Schwartzenbruin
in 594 CY, where he was given a state funeral.
