Perrenland Religion

The Worship of Nerull in Perrenland

One thing that regularly puzzles and concerns visitors to Perrenland is the apparent acceptance and public worship of Nerull as part of the Old Kerk pantheon. They ask, how can civilised people willingly worship a god of death who delights in names like the Reaper, the Hater of Life, and the Foe of All Things Good?

The short answer is, they don't.

The longer answer is that death is a part of the natural order of things, that all things must die, and that to refuse to acknowledge the power of the god of death is to invite death to come sooner. Also, it's tradition.

Old Kerk religious ceremonies that include Nerull do so either for the sake of completeness (that is, the ceremony includes all the other gods of the Old Kerk) or to placate Nerull. Unlike the Shools of the other nine gods, the Shool of Nerull is not a public cult - the only publicly acknowledged member of the Shool of Nerull is the Hand of Nerull, who is chosen each year by Nerull to lead the ceremony at Schwartzenbruin called the Dance of Nerull.

For further information, see the Dance of Nerull document.

Metagame information: As per the Living Greyhawk Campaign Standards, a player character cleric who belongs to the Old Kerk cannot choose Nerull as their patron deity.
